September 16/17, 06 Clinic Report

If you want to be Veterinarian one of the ways to find out more about the career is to attend one of Placenica Humane’s monthly Clinics – and that’s just what Johney Popper of Seine Bight did this month.   She worked with our regular volunteers and was able to observe surgeries to get an idea of what this profession involved.
Dr. Edward Tesecum was the visiting Veterinary Surgeon and welcomed Johney Popper to the Clinic – Dr. Tesecum is interested in supporting young people who are interested in the profession.  We’re looking forward to seeing Johney again and again as the visit only served to further her interest.
Dr. Tesecum attended to over 60 pets at the Clinic.  He performed 10 surgeries and administered other treatments including 26 rabies shots – a very important annual shot for your pets.  He also made over 40 house calls.
Emily Langille, a Veterinary Technician from San Pedro, also attended the Clinic.    Emily assisted the medical team and in addition adopted two kittens from our kitten adoption program that is run by Pamela Keck. Emily hopes to be a regular visitor to our Clinics and we’re looking forward to working with her.
Administration volunteers were Mary Smith (Clinic Coordinator) Angie Markham, Mary Ann Kay, Madalon Richardson, Shannon Romero and Marcia Fox.  The medical team this month included Pamela Keck, Elsie Elder and Stella Matthews.  The Doctor and his assistant were hosted by Mariposa Beach Suites. Our thanks to everyone concerned – without you all our Clinics would not be possible.
The next Clinic will be on Saturday/Sunday, October 21/22.  If your pet needs surgery please make an appointment.   If you need a house call these have to be booked too and there is an additional charge payable to the Doctor for coming to your home.   Also, no Promissory Notes can be issued for house calls; the Doctor has to be paid at the time of the visit.  The number to call is 523-4306 for more information.
For more information about PHS. please visit our website: www.placencia-pets.org And if you are interested in volunteering please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Stella Matthews at 606-0754 – there are many programs that need volunteers in addition to our Clinics.  Stella can explain our various programs to you and where we need help.   Remember you can volunteer for a one time event (like Halloween) or for ongoing programs (like the Clinics) – whatever time or skill you have to offer would be very much appreciated – and if you don’t have the time to spare, you can support us by becoming a member of PHS.

The Perils of Pee Wee

Chapter 1

In the beginning……All I remember is I was always cold and hungry. I don’t really know how I got there – there was a cold, dark place where we were all huddled together around lots of trash.
I could sense there were others around me in this cold dark place – I thought of them as my family and we all snuggled up together to keep warm – I had yet to learn what they were.
Eventually the darkness lifted – what had really happened that my eyes had opened and I was surprised to see that there six others like me in my family.
At first we were looked after by a much bigger copy of me (I since learned that was Mama Cat). She fed us and kept us as warm as it was possible in that cold dark place, but one day Mama Cat didn’t return.
We all became very anxious when Mama Cat didn’t return. We all became very hungry too – and when it started to rain we were all very cold.
Left alone we didn’t know how to get our food and drink – we were all really anxious when two of the family died and we just didn’t know what was going to happen to us. We still snuggled up together but somehow we couldn’t get warm while we were so hungry.
It seemed it was in the middle of the night, but actually it was the middle of the day but it had been raining hard and the sky was dark – but suddenly we heard a sound of someone or something coming into our dark, cold space. We had no-one to protect us so we all huddled together in a very dark corner and under some trash.
The next thing I remember was being lifted out of the corner with my family and all of us being put into a box. This was a miracle to us – the box was clean and comfortable and for the very first time we felt secure. Little did we all know but our life was about to change.
