Hopes For Peninsula Road

On Friday October 20th five delegates from the Caribbean Development Bank and Cadet Henderson and Bill Cuevas from Ministry of Works held a meeting with citizens of the Placencia Peninsula about the Placencia Road project.  The CDB representatives were here on the peninsula to assess the feasibility of the proposed road and to see if residents of the peninsula were even interested in having the road paved.  Continue>>>>>

Placencia Mooring Master Buoy Project

Phase 1 underway. Contributed by the Placencia Mooring Masters
Placencia Mooring Masters has been awarded the grant from Coral Reef Alliance & WWF for the project to install buoys in the greater Placencia waters. Mooring buoys protect the reef by being an alternative anchorage system to dropping anchor, which damages fragile corals. Before any installations can occur site surveys have to be carried out to determine site suitability and equipment requirements for each proposed mooring site.  Continue >>>>>>

Garifuna Settlement Day

On November 19th the celebrations commence to mark the arrival of the first Garifuna to Belize in 1832. The day, called Garifuna Settlement Day, is celebrated throughout the country, but especially in Dangriga, the cultural capital of Belize. There is traditional Garifuna and Belizean food, live punta music, games and Jonkunu dancers. In addition they reenact 'The Landing.'
The Garifuna are a people produced from the merging of two cultures. The history goes that two slave ships were shipwrecked in the Caribbean near the island of St. Vincent. The slaves escaped the sinking boat and reached the shores of the island, where they were welcomed by the Caribs, who offered their protection. Their intermarriage formed the Garifuna people. The Garifuna adopted the Carib language but kept their African musical and religious traditions. Continue >>>>>>

Apologies to Bella Maya Resort
In last month’s issue of the Breeze I wrote a short article titled “Placencia BTIA GOES TO BETEX” I would like to apologize to Bella Maya Resort for not mentioning that they attended BETEX along with the other Placencia peninsula businesses. This was not intentionally done. Mr. Paul Willcox and Alistair Auty both represented Bella Maya Resort at BETEX 2006. Again I apologize.
Respectfully James Cleve Westby of the Placencia BTIA/ Tourism Center.
