Mission Impossible

…….or so one would have thought a little while ago. What is the chance of a litter of kittens being saved after being abandoned or abused? Little to none………but that was before Pam Keck (a board member of the Placencia Humane Society) came on the scene. Pam Keck runs a rescue program for kittens (Purrs and Whiskers) out of her home and works very closely with PHS.
In this instance, these kittens would not have survived without Pam’s intervention – feeding every two hours (day and night) the kittens have grown, and are thriving. They will soon be ready for adoption. Before adoption each kitten will be neutered to avoid all unnecessary reproduction. Remember: one female cat and it’s offspring can produce 420, 000 kittens in just seven years.
If you are interested in adopting a kitten you can either contact Purrs and Whiskers (Pam Keck) at 520-4057 or make inquiries at the monthly PHS Clinics.
The next PHS. Clinic will be held over the weekend of May 20/21 (Clinic Coordinator: Mary Smith 523-4306).
So many thanks Pam………..MISSION COMPLETED.

Placencia Humane Society April 22/23, 2006 Clinic Report

Junior members are always welcomed at our monthly clinics, and this month, Teresa Godfrey joined the volunteer team. Teresa worked with Shannon Romero on the reception desk and provided valuable assistance.
Dr. Bennett was the visiting Veterinary Surgeon and he successfully treated over 70 pets during his visit, performing 6 surgeries, 47 vaccinations and 8 rabies vaccinations (an important part of animal care).
Volunteering this month were Mary Smith, Elsie Elder, Pam Keck, Madalon Richardon, Marcia Fox, Shannon Romero, Joe Nasca and of course Jr. member Teresa Godfrey – many thanks everyone for a great job.
Lunch was provided both days by PHS supporters – our thanks to Ginger Jones and Tina Hess for providing food and drink to the volunteers – a big energy boost for everyone and a very special way of demonstrating support.
Colibri Beach Villa hosted Dr. Bennett –the visiting doctors put in long weekend hours to service the peninsula pets and really appreciate the accommodations provided.
Next Clinic is May 20/21 (always the third weekend of each month) – please be sure to book your pet’s surgeries well in advance by calling Mary Smith (Clinic coordinator) at 523-4306. PHS now has a waiting list for surgery appointments.
Please also note that Clinic routines have been changed to better serve pet owners. Surgeries are now performed both days (Saturday and Sunday) in the mornings only. Veterinarians believe that pets recover more quickly and require less anesthetic when surgeries are performed earlier in the day. And very important, do NOT feed your pet the day of surgery – that could promote a life threatening event during surgery.
The afternoons of both days are devoted to general clinic visits – no appointments are necessary. Hours for both days are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
PHS is an entirely volunteer organization and relies entirely on donations to provide its services. All monies collected at the Clinics go directly to the visiting Veterinary Surgeon.
PHS provides many services to pet owners; the monthly Clinic being just one of these. If you are interested in learning more about PHS, please visit our website: www.placencia-pets.org If you are interested in volunteering please let us know – you can call me at 523-4069.
………and if you would like to see your pet on the Web, just send us your pictures.

What is 'THE PLACENCIA HOP?'

……Country & Western Nights in Placencia
You want to learn the ‘Placencia Hop’ – then put on your cowboy boots and get to Yoli’s Bar and Restaurant. Once a month Yoli makes her bar and restaurant available to PHS for a Country & Western night. There is no admittance charge, but it is an opportunity for ‘Cowboys’ to support PHS by joining in the fun and indeed ‘cowboys’ of all shapes and sizes join together regularly to make these evenings successful fundraisers for PHS.
There is also an opportunity to purchase PHS T-Shirts, mugs and wine glasses. Donations in April amounted to $305; we also sold 5 T-shirts and 3 mugs. Many thanks to everyone who was there and made donations – PHS very much appreciates the support. Also big thanks to the PHS volunteers who made the evening possible (Mary Smith, Madalon Richardson, Stella Matthews, Marcia Fox and Mary Toy).
Many thanks Yoli for this creative way of supporting PHS – all the funds raised from the evening’s event go towards the care of pets on the peninsula.
The Placencia Humane Society is a registered company and operated entirely by volunteers ……if you want to learn more about the PHS please visit our website: www.placencia-pets.org
Also, please mark your calendars for the next Yoli’s Country & Western Night – Friday, May 26...hop on down!!!
