Spotlight On Placencia BTIA
Westwind Hotel
The story of the Westwind Hotel begins approximately 15 years ago when George Westby returned to Belize from the United States. Piece by piece, he transported building materials from the US to Placencia for the construction of the hotel. Many changes were made along the way, but now, the Westwind Hotel on the Beach is a 10 room facility, which includes 8 double rooms and two family units.
In 2004 the garden behind the hotel began to take shape. Still a work in progress, hotel guests enjoy meandering the paths to find many blooming orchids, cycads and other tropical plants.
The Westwind Hotel is located on the beach in the heart of Placencia Village and owned and operated by George S. Westby, and his wife, Lisa Westby.
PPAA 4th Annual Sidewalk Festival Almost Here!!!!
Artists from all over Belize are expected to attend this year’s Placencia Peninsula Arts Association 4th Annual Sidewalk Art Festival. Last year’s event was filled with incredible art ranging from painting to sculptures to jewelry and exciting cultural activities. This year only promises to be better!
Artists should be set up and ready to go just after 10 am on Saturday morning and display their artwork throughout the day and all day Sunday. Art lovers, if you are thinking of purchasing a piece or several pieces start looking by mid day Saturday. Traditionally sought after pieces are sold early.

THE FRIGATES OF PLACENCIA by Peter Johnson
More like black Chinese kites than real birds,
Above the beach they drift with outstretched wings,
Seemingly motionless and in formation
Wings not needed,
Back and forth they patrol heedless of below,
Often very high at sunset, touching the moon,
Are the males glimpsing the near naked ladies below?
Are their red chins caused by drooling ever so much?
Alone, or in crowds of three or more,
All they joyfully seek are the Caribbean Sea breezes,
The sky seems less blue if they are not about,
God alone knows why frigates have nothing better to do,
Than to entice earth-bound poets to write in envy of them.
