Reef Restoration at Laughing Bird Caye National Park

Twenty Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) fragments have been transferred from Gladden Spit Marine Reserve and placed at Laughing Bird Caye, The map shows the approximate positions with black x’s. The fragments range in size from very small, new colonies (6cm) to larger (over 40 cm), well-established colonies like the one shown in the photograph.
The methodology used was gleaned from experts in Florida and Mexico: cement mixed with a special plaster that accelerates its hardening time. Snorklers may have noticed large cable ties that held the corals in place while the cement sets fully, these will eventually be removed.

BTIA HOLDS 21ST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

BELIZE CITY, Belize - The Belize Tourism Industry Association hosed its 21st Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Election of Officers at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza on November 16, 2006.
The outgoing President, Lucy Fleming gave the President's Address and Welcome. In her remarks she noted that "We have gained and will continue to gain credibility, and this is power. The power to be listened to, to be part of policy decision making, and to make Belize a more attractive destination and, at the end of the day, a better country." She went on to say that "It’s been work, hard work at times, but it has been good work, with a sense of purpose and, ultimately, fulfillment. I wouldn't have traded it for anything…"
