Cycle 4 Sonny

Levi “Sonny” Vernon is a well-known and respected Placencia person. He is a charter member of the Rotary Club of Placencia, former Placencia Village Council member, Special Constable and Volunteer Fire Fighter. However his roles don’t stop with just that. Sonny has always been known as someone who is always there to assist any project and individuals. He truly is one of Placencia’s unsung heroes.

In September, Sonny and Annette Vernon traveled to Merida, Mexico where Sonny undertook a very serious and expensive surgery. He had developed a degenerative compressed disc in the upper spine (neck area) that was slowly inhibiting the movement on the right side of his body. The surgery was successful but Sonny and Annette are still in Merida where Sonny is undergoing extensive physiotherapy to learn to walk again.

With all the cost of this, Wini Mertens came up with the idea of a bike rally to raise money to assist the Vernons. And so “Cycle 4 Sonny began.

Thanks to Placencia Office Supply for creating the posters for the rally, especially Recia for the lovely design. Friends diligently began finding sponsors with overwhelming results. Special thanks to Tom McTaggart for his extensive list of sponsors.

No one could have asked for a more perfect morning with cool temperatures, a brisk breeze and the occasional misting of rain. Everyone met at the Shell dock with Miss Lydia Villanueva ready to give support and words of encouragement. Promptly at eight o’clock the riders pedaled off. The route was to Cocoplum and back again, approximately 15 miles.

The support vehicles were manned by Jim Weller, Greg Valiton, Steve Lobban and the ever-present Dr. Alexis scooted up and down the queue of riders ensuring all went well. Miss Ivy from the Peninsula Store in Seine Bight generously donated a case of juice to quench the riders thirst along the way.

Congratulations to all the riders and supporters of the rally. The list of riders are as follows: Tiffany Westby, Nazle Frutos, Boris Mannsfield, Kai & Liam Parham, Penny, Ellie & Cassie Dial, Darryn & Tessa Eiley, Logan & Ryan Westby Harald Wallen, Tom McTaggart, Deb & Ciara Vernon, Bill & Lisa Harding, Dominic Rotier, Jeff & Oscar Scott, Laura Godfrey, Salva & Gillian Zabaneh, Barnacle Bill, Allie Smith, Wanda Stakius, Lloydia Caballero, Erwin Lazzeri, Anton Leslie, Andrew Westby, Erin &
