BLESSING AND DEDICATION OF THE PLACENCIA LAGOON
On Friday, November 27, 2009 at 3:30 PM., Belize clergy will bless and dedicate the Placencia lagoon. This interdenominational and cultural service will be held on the lagoon side of Serenity Resort.
This service of blessing will draw on many traditions and will include Garifuna singing, drumming, and dancing, Bible readings in Kriol and English, prayers in Spanish and English, and the singing of favorite hymns.
The Rt. Revd. Philip Wright (Anglican Bishop of Belize), Pastor Jim Mensie (Plantation Chapel) Father Dominic McDonagh CMF, Pastor Gene Moore (Placencia Worship Center), Rev. Father Hardie Gordon, (Placencia St. John's Anglican Church), Rev. Lorna Sampson, and Seine Bight's Bobby Sanchez's Ligemmari Dance Group are among those participating in the Lagoon Blessing and Dedication.
Also in attendance will be members of Government, representatives from the Ministries, and from local and National NGO's. It is expected that there will be a large attendance of both local residents and tourists for this unique event, which may become an annual feature on the Placencia peninsula calendar.
This service of blessing will focus on the importance of the mangroves and lagoon as refuge and breeding grounds for manatee, dolphins, rays, and a wide variety of other marine life including fish and lobster, as well as a natural protection of Placencia peninsula communities from storms and erosions. It will also ask God to direct the people of the area in creating a balance between the needs of development and the respect for natural resources.
A free shuttle bus will be provided from Placencia and Seine Bight Villages to the service. The bus will leave Placencia Point at 2:45, picking up people long the way and delivering to the lagoon site. A bus will leave Seine Bight at 3:15, picking up people along the way to deliver to the lagoon site. A free return bus shuttle will also be provided.
The service will be held under cover in case of rain, and ample parking will be available. Refreshments will be served.
This service is sponsored by Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development.
