The 2009 Belize Sea Turtle Expo was created by members of the Belize Sea Turtle Conservation Network and supported by Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) and NGO’s countrywide.
On June 11th and 12th, Southern Environmental Association (SEA Belize), in collaboration with our community schools of St. Alphonsus Primary – Seine Bight, St. Johns Memorial – Placencia, and Independence Primary School shared information on all sea turtles and in particular the “Hawksbill Sea Turtle” which is an endangered species and protected under the Belize Fisheries Laws.
The activities included a short presentation, activity sheet, quiz and poster presentation. The posters were developed by all organizations in the Belize Sea Turtle Network and included information on the work that the all organizations are doing to try to protect and monitor sea turtles in Belize.
SEA’s Biologist Ms. Christina Garcia, Science Coordinator Miss Jocelyn Finch and Outreach Officer Mr. Justino Mendez engaged students and teachers in a question and answer session as we learned about all marine sea turtles. While students answered correctly, SEA passed out posters, candy and t-shirts as prizes to award their participation.
Overall in the communities of South Stann Creek the 2009 Sea Turtle Expo was well received with students walking away knowing more about sea turtles, their conservation and the ways that they can help to protect this unique, beautiful and endangered species. SEA and the Belize Sea Turtle Conservation Network look forward to making this a yearly event.
