Sunny, Beautiful Weather Made for the PERFECT Placencia Lobsterfest

By Elysia Dial

For the first time in several years Placencia’s Annual Lobsterfest was blessed with exquisitely sunny and calm weather from start to finish, making it one of the most attended Lobsterfest weekends in years.

Crowds had ample opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and Placencia’s famous beaches in between sampling delicious lobster cuisine, listening to Caribbean style music, watching performances by ballerinas, and games of strength.

Highlights of the weekend included the Placencia Fishermen’s Day Saltwater Tournament, where the youngest captain & crew ever (Dolphin - Capt Warren Cabral Jr) walked away with more than $6,000 in cash and prizes sweeping the Best Boat and Grand Slam categories to name a few, also the Placencia BTIA Lobsterfest Raffle (see page 4 for raffle list), the Tipsy Tuna Toss, and of course 3 nights of great music for dancing and enjoying with the Rejects Friday night courtesy of Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar and Gilharry 7 both Saturday & Sunday courtesy of the Belize Tourism Board, Placencia Tour Guide Association & Atlantic Bank.

Placencia Lobsterfest is organized by the Placencia BTIA/Placencia Tourism Center and the Placencia Village Council and is the largest fundraiser for both groups so support from the community, the rest of Belize and of course thosewhot travel from around the world to the festival is crucial to the festival’s existence. It is also a very important stimulus to the area’s economy - most hotels are booked out for the weekend, several restaurants, boutique and artisans “relocate” to booths at the festival where their newfound and regular customers can find them, and non profit groups such as the Placencia Mooring Masters, the PTAs of area primary & preschools and the Placencia Humane Society get the opportunity to raise awareness while making a little something for each group's continued existence.

Major sponsors of Placencia Lobsterfest weekend include the Belize Tourism Board, Sol Belize, Shell Placencia, The Peninsula Club, Chabil Mar Villas, Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar, Tarpon Caye Lodge, Insurance Corporation of Belize, Bowen & Bowen, Love FM, Placencia Tour Guide Association, Atlantic Bank, and Placencia Water Board. Many others help to make the weekend possible too numerous to name but very much appreciated nonetheless.

Placencia Lobsterfest is the perfect time for area residents to give back to their community in the form of volunteering - an hour or two of bartending, lending a hand setting up and taking down the tents, selling t-shirts - your Placencia Village Council and Placencia BTIA appreciate any and all help that is given.

Placencia Lobsterfest is ALWAYS the last full weekend of June and the dates for next year are set.

Placencia Lobsterfest 2010 - June 25th, 26th & 27th!

We’ll See You There!!!!
