A PUBLICATION OF THE PLACENCIA CHAPTER OF THE BELIZE TOURISM INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION
PHS May, June, July Clinic Report:
May Clinic
Dr. Floyd Bennett, veterinarian, had a very long and full weekend attending
to all the pets at the May, 2009 animal clinic sponsored by the Placencia Humane
Society.
For four long days, from May 15-18, Dr. Bennett provided the following medical
services to our animals:
Four female cats were spayed, Two male cats were neutered,
Three female dogs were spayed, Four male dogs were neutered, Two dogs had their
teeth cleaned, Thirty one rabies vaccinations were given, Four cats were given
4-1 vaccination, Twenty eight dogs were given 6-1 vaccinations.
The Humane Society's commitment to attending to rescued animals continued during
this clinic: two rescued cats were cut, six rescued cats were cut, two rescued
dogs were cut, and one rescued dog had his teeth cleaned.
Yes, this is a long list of treatments and is an affirmation of how
successful these Humane Society clinics are.
While the Placencia Community Center hosted the animal clinic Saturday and Sunday, Dr. Bennett was out in the field providing 17 home visits on Friday and Monday.
During one of these home visits, one dog in Maya Beach was neutered. The
number of home visits has been growing rapidly and confirms how truly outreaching
these Humane Society clinics have become.
As always, these clinics rely totally on dedicated and committed volunteers.
The May 2009 clinic saw these following folks giving selflessly of their time
and energies: Pamela Keck, Mary Anne Kaye, Pat Rarrick, Juana Itch, Beth Princiotta,
and Renza Hoban.
Thanks to all these volunteers, and special thanks to Lost Reef Resort, who
hosted Dr. Bennett during his stay here.
June Clinic
On June 20 and 21, 2009, the Placencia Humane Society held its monthly animal clinic in the Placencia Community Center.
It was a more quiet clinic (Father's Day weekend), but Dr. Miguel Figueroa still provided important services to our pets.
One female cat and two female dogs were spayed. Six pets had their rabies
shots: twenty two cats and dogs had their annual vaccinations. Dr. Figueroa
made three home visits. The clinic closed one half hour earlier on Sunday, June
21. This gave Dr. Figueroa more time to enjoy Father's Day with his own children
in Belize City.
The kindness of individuals and businesses is a huge key to the success of these clinics. Robert's Grove hosted Dr. Figueroa. Wende of the Pickled Parrot generously provided lunches.
Many thanks to Renza Hoban, Cat Harshbarger, Lesa Jordon, Pat Rarrick, Pamela Keck, Mary Anne Kaye, and Nancy Lewandowski.
July Clinic:
July 17 through July 21, 2009, Dr. Floyd Bennett provided veterinary services
to the Placencia Humane Society.
On July 17, Dr. Bennett made thirteen house calls. On July 18-19, the Placencia
Community Center once again housed the PHS monthly clinic.
Four dogs and four cats were spayed. Four cats and one dog were neutered.
Twenty seven animals were vaccinated against rabies, and thirty three cats and
dogs received their annual vaccinations.
Once again, this clinic was staffed by its devoted volunteers: Pamela Keck,
Juana Itch, Mary Anne Kaye, Renza Hoban, Pam Thomas, Pat Rarrick, Lesa Jordan,
and Jeanne Marechal. Thank you, PHS team!
July was designated as "Feral Cat Month," where feral cats were to be trapped,
cut, vaccinated, and released. However PHS traps were "trapped" in Belize
customs, so this program did not materialize this month. However, determination
being PHS's motto, this was no deterrent.
Responding to a request from
the manager of Turtle Inn Resort to trap feral cats on its property, PHS
used the three traps that it already had. Three cats were trapped. One cat
was unfortunately too seriously injured and was euthanized. PHS will continue
to work with Turtle Inn to set traps each month until all cats are trapped,
cut, vaccinated, and released.
On July 20, PHS traveled down to Monkey River, where Dr. Bennett made three
house calls Twelve animals were brought to the clinic, where all were given
worming, rabies, and 6-1 vaccinations. Between house calls and clinic animals
a total of 22 pets were seen.
Sue Harris also did all the advertising and promotional work in Monkey River
for this vet visit. This is PHS third year of providing this clinic in Monkey
River.
On July 21, Pamela Keck's home was the site for three additional surgeries:
one Maya Beach dog was spayed, and two cats were neutered.
These clinics require not only a great deal of dedication and commitment
from its volunteers, but also an amazing amount of attention to details and
planning. The PHS is grateful to everyone who contributes time, services,
and financial support to this very important cause.
Many thanks to Lost Reef Resort for hosting Dr. Bennett during his stay here.
The next PHS clinic is scheduled for August 15-16, 2009. To schedule a surgery
or house call please contact Pat Rarrick at 610-0522.
Thank you. The PHS Board
