Placencia Road - Almost Completed!

By Elysia Dial

For years the Placencia Peninsula road has been a driver’s nightmare. The twenty-two miles of dusty and/or muddy, rocky road that was the demise of many a low riding vehicle that connected the peninsula to the Southern Highway was often the reason for not driving into Placencia. For years anytime a visitor would pose the question, “When are they going to pave your road?” peninsula residents could only laugh. After all the topic had become a bit of a joke - it seemed as if our road was never going to be paved.

Well times have changed, the contract for the paving of the road was signed in July of 2008 and the preparation began shortly after that. The crews have worked quickly and efficiently and people that traveled the road only on occasion have often commented, “Wow! They’ve paved all the way to _______! Last time I drove up it was only as far as ________!” Impressive indeed.

It seems as if we are just months, if not weeks away from the completion of the paving. A small stretch between the Riversdale turn off to just north of the Placencia Hotel and Residences - approx. 2.5 miles is all that is left to be paved as far as the average driver is concerned.

Now the idea of a weekend away to Placencia from just about anywhere in the country of Belize is an easy option! Just 2.5 - 3 hours to Placencia from Belize City. A great choice for a 3 day weekend and the way to go for the Placencia Lobsterfest weekend - June 25th, 26th, & 27th! Check it out for yourself!!!!
