Earth Day Saturday April 24
On Earth Day 2010, 100 enthusiastic kids aged 10 to 16 and some dedicated parents and Earth Day supporters turned out for a day of environmental participation and fun at Laughing Bird Caye. The main objectives were to have fun, learn about the environment and to do a thorough cleanup of the garbage that had drifted onto the caye over the past year. In addition to being a National Park and World Heritage site, Laughing Bird Caye is a showcase for the beauty of Belize visited by thousands of tourists and Belizeans every year.
Members of Splash’s Kids Diving Club did impressive presentations on lion fish, climate change, lobsters, marine protected areas and whale sharks. Thirty bags of garbage were collected and the mooring buoy at Coral Gardens got a thorough cleaning. All enjoyed a great lunch on the beach thanks to Wendy’s Restaurant, Rum Fish, Tommy’s Restaurant, D’Thatch, Yoli’s, SEA, Nan Kee Supermarket, The Placencia Supermarket and Everyday Supermarket. Thanks go to SEA, Eworth garbutt, D’Eclipse, Frigate Caye, SEA, Splash Dive Center and Ralph capeling who provided boats to get everyone there and back and to MnM, Placencia Hotel and Gardens and the Inn at Robert’s Grove who contributed boat fuel. And to the Fisherman’s Co-op for providing ice.
Special thanks go to Patty Ramirez and Pablo Mendoza of Splash Dive Center for organizing this event and to all the people who supported this special day.
