Danube Austrian Restaurant

DANUBE’s owners are Herbert and Simone, both from Austria. We moved to Belize in March 2008 and built our restaurant in one of the most picturesque places in the world - BELIZE. We have traveled around the world and have experienced many countries and cultures but fulfilled our dreams by settling here in Belize: a country which is relaxing and full of spirit! We were often asked why we have chosen Belize to open our restaurant… 1. it is absolute beautiful 2. it is English speaking 3. it is political stable and safe 4. owning property and a business is not a problem for foreigners and to meet rules and regulations is easy as those are pretty straight forward. During a vacation in Belize we wanted to check out the opportunity and fell in love with the Placencia Peninsula. Then everything went quick, we bought the property, designed the building and left Placencia, to return half a year later, to complete our project.

We chose DANUBE [‘ dænju:b] as the name of our restaurant as it is the name of the largest river in Europe. The RIVER DANUBE which flows through the heart of Europe acts as a connecting hub for the many cultures, and Belize like Europe is also a melting pot of many different cultures with influences from the ancient Mayas to the Garifunas, to today's vibrant Belize.

DANUBE opened its doors on October 8th 2008 after about one year of construction in its own building South of Seine Bight. We offer first and foremost Austrian but also Central European Cuisine.

Austria boasts one of the world’s most famous culinary traditions. A diverse yet delectably harmonious range of dishes reflects the mix of nationalities and food cultures through the centuries. Amongst our specialties are Viennese Schnitzel, Goulash, Meat Dumplings, home-made sausages as well as Meat and Cheese Fondue. Austrians like to eat well, and what they like to eat best is dessert. That’s why we offer a large variety of delicious desserts – Sweet Dumplings filled e.g. with Chocolate, Rasberries or Plums as well as Sachertorte and Apple Strudel, just to name a few.

The team behind DANUBE is very small. Herbert is the chef and Simone takes care of all what our guests need. This is probably one of our secrets: personal service and high quality as well as an inviting ambience. We tried to bring Old World style and Belizean Beauty together. The beautiful garden is looked after by Luciano who’s knowledge of plants is amazing. Eating at DANUBE means more than just having a meal. After dinner there is no need to rush, instead you can enjoy a nice glass of wine as back in Austria, where you spend sometimes the whole evening with your friends sitting and chatting and enjoying life.

Every now and then the daily routine leaves some time to enjoy the beauty of Placencia while diving, kayaking or just relaxing on the beach – also one of the reasons being here.
