Rural Schools Can Excel!
It is often thought that rural schools in Belize are somehow second class.

It’s true that they labour under many difficulties which schools in more developed areas don’t have. For example, St. Stephen’s Anglican Primary School in Monkey River does not have electricity – so no computers, no fans, no lights – none of the things which city schools take for granted.

However a dedicated staff, led by well know educator Principal Walter Garbutt, offers the children an education which rivals that of many city schools.

Says Principal Walter, “It takes hard work, ingenuity, and the support of parents and friends, but we can offer things in a rural school which other schools would envy. For example, small classes, a very peaceful and beautiful environment which becomes our outdoor classroom, and children who are willing to learn.”

On a recent visit Mrs. Marlene Leslie, General Manager of Education for the Anglican School, commended three teachers in particular for their high standard of work, Teachers Kathleen Garbutt, Virginia Linarez and Kasia Gordon.

The school has ambitious plans for the future including a feeding programme, a school farm producing vegetables and chickens, and an increasing emphasis on science and practical skill.
