PHS April Clinic Report:
Feral Feline Control in PlacenciaClinic weekend started early in April with 4 dogs being spayed in Seine Bight on Friday. Pastor Don of Ministries of the Son of God Church was generous enough to let us use his church for the small clinic.
In total Dr. Bennett spayed/neutered 7 dogs and 3 cats. A resident of Placencia trapped a feral cat and it was also cut as well as given its vaccines.
One of the dogs scheduled for surgery on Saturday died before his surgery took place. Heartworm was immediately suspected and an autopsy done later in the day confirmed this suspicion. If your dog is not currently on a heartworm preventative, please consider starting one. If not protected and your dog gets heartworms, they will eventually kill your pet.
Besides the surgeries, Dr. Bennett also gave one dog a teeth cleaning, administered 22 rabies shots, 2 cat 4-1 vaccinations and 33 dog 6-1 vaccinations. The 6-1 vaccination for dogs protects your dog against 6 different diseases. Some of these diseases can be fatal. Right
now in Belize we are in Parvo season. Parvo can kill your dog by not allowing his body to absorb fluids and your dog ultimately will die from dehydration. The 6-1 vaccination protects your dog against Parvo. Please come by the clinic for a list of the diseases the 6-1 vaccine protects your dog against.
On an unusual note a squirrel was brought in by her young owner for a rabies vaccination. It was determined that the animal was too young so the squirrel received lots of attention but no shot.
Our volunteers this month were Mary Ann Kaye, Pamela Keck, Pat Rarrick, Pam Thomas, Cat Harshbarger, Juana Itch, Nancy Lewandowski, Barb Bell, Beth Princiotta and Renza Hoban.

The Placencia Humane Society is in process of importing 15 live cat
traps.
With these traps PHS has a unique opportunity to implement an aggressive program
to reduce the overpopulation of cats in Placencia and the surrounding villages.
Our
intent is to pick strategic locations and, with community involvement, set the
traps 2 days a month. All cats trapped would be spayed or neutered, vaccinated
and have their ear cropped as identification. We expect delivery
of these traps within the next 4 weeks and hope to have our first cat clinic
in either June or July.
In order for this program to work PHS will need community involvement. Anyone
who is interested in assisting PHS in setting traps and releasing the cats
after surgery and recovery please contact Pamela Keck at 520-4057, or Pat Rarrick
at 610-0522.
All cat clinics will be advertized on the radio and through BTIA, and notices
will be put up around the village. Please watch for this notification. If
you do not want your cat to be cut and have their ear cropped you will need
to keep your cat inside when the traps are set.
PHS is very excited about this new program. We have been working since
last July to get these traps in and are pleased to see it finally happen.
PHS will be purchasing all the medications for the program as well as paying
a vet fee and some transportation costs. Financially PHS is solely supported
by the accessory sales at the clinic, memberships and donations. All the money
that is collected at clinic for veterinary services is paid directly to the
veterinarian. PHS does not keep any of this money.
With
the additional monies needed for the cat program your donations and/or memberships
are greatly needed and greatly appreciated. If your membership has expired
or is close to expiring please consider renewing. For memberships please
contact Mary Ann at 523-3651, 670-3491 or maryann.inbz@yahoo.com

of just four of our rescues. All pets are spayed or neutered, tested for heartworm
and tick fever and all shots are up to date for the age of the animal
