Peninsula Fire Board

On March 14, 2010, the party being held to celebrate the life of Miss Bianca was interrupted by a major fire. The members of the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department responded within a short period of time and, despite the challenges posed by the location (approximately 700 ft. from the lagoon and the sea) and problems obtaining water, there was no loss of life, no injuries, and damage was confined to 4 buildings (2 of which were empty and already fully engulfed when the fire was called in). A follow up meeting was held on March 18 including the Peninsula Fire Board, members of the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department, the Village Council Chairman, and several representatives of the National Fire Service to discuss the fire and the response. Despite the fact that the representatives from the National Fire Service indicated that the response and performance of the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department was good, especially under the circumstances, the Fire Department received feedback in an effort to improve the response on future fires.

The Peninsula Fire Board and the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department wish to thank the National Fire Service for their input, the firefighters from Seine Bight Village that arrived at the fire scene quickly, the firefighters from the Independence Fire Department for their fast response, and, especially, the members of the community (and more than a few visitors) that formed the bucket brigade from the end of the pump line out of the sea to the fire scene. Without the assistance of all these people, the damage would have been much worse and injuries or fatalities could have easily been part of the story. One thing that was apparent from the fire is that community involvement is critical to have an effective volunteer Fire Department and it is hoped that more members of the community will volunteer and come out to train. Anyone who is interested in helping to provide this valuable service in their community is encouraged to speak to Fire Chief Kathy Anglin, Fire Captain Jim Weller, or any volunteer firefighter to find out when practice is scheduled and what they can do to help.
