Night Skies over Placencia:
Northers Really Blow. So Why are the Fish Not Biting?

When the seasonal ‘Northers’ blow, the water cools down, the waves whip up the ocean, the currents are all stirred up and it may take a day or two for the fish to adjust and begin feeding again.

During Full Moon the fish can see better to feed. During New Moon, they have more trouble seeing. This makes them even more hungry, therefore easier to catch.

So remember: Full Moon = high tides = stronger currents = fish are more willing to take the bait, and also there are better tides for saltwater fishing.

How do the tides work? The earth continues to rotate and the moon continues its orbit – gravity pulling a bulge of water along with them. Tidal movement is from east to west and south to north in the northern hemisphere. When the bulge of water moves on, the water left behind is referred to as the "low tide".

Anyway, let’s go fishing!

And Finally…
Speaking of the Moon: phases for May 2009 are Full Moon May 9, Last Quarter May 17, New Moon May 24, First Quarter May 31, and Full June 7, Last Quarter June 15, New Moon June 22 and First Quarter June 29. Fishing will be Good: May 8 and 9, and June 14 and 15; Better: June 4, 15, and 26 (none in May); Best: May 26 and 27 and June 5, 23 and 24, 2009. Happy Fishing!!
