Spotlight on Placencia BTIA- Seahorse Dive Shop

Brian Young Sr. started out at the Rum Point Inn, which was the only resort on the peninsula at that time. He set up the dive shop there in 1990, working with Rum Point’s owners George & Corol Bevier, in creating quality tours for those adventuresome tourists that came to Belize. His brothers Malcolm and Carlton joined him there. In 1995, Brian felt the need branch out and start his own business. Seahorse Dive Shop opened its doors in the year 1996 and was the first dive shop in the village of Placencia. Brian and his wife Ardeth, affectionately known by most as Ardie, were the only employees at that time but not for very long. The dive shop was built out over the water right at the point – a perfect location for launching tours out to the cayes.

Seahorse quickly became one of the most famous and popular dive shops down south. Brian was one of the first to discover the Whale Shark migration in 1990 while trying to come up with new and exciting tours at Rum Point Inn. The tour was a hit! People loved it! Then in 1996 bigger tours were organized officially for the Whale Shark Tours and it soon became THE trip for Placencia’s dive industry. Other excursions that are organized through Seahorse Dive Shop are the Blue Hole Dive- which requires a 40ft boat, Glover’s Reef & Shark Hole.

Over the years Seahorse Dive Shop and its work with whale sharks has been featured on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, The Learning Channel and CNN. Seahorse Dive Shop has also worked with many environmental groups including WWF.
Seahorse’s number one priority is safety. Knock on wood, Seahorse Dive Shop has not encountered any incident from the first day its door opened till now. All guides hired to work at Seahorse must be local, knowledgeable and well experienced guide. These guides are trained by Brian and his brother Carlton Jr. Brian was one of Placencia’s first Dive Master Instructor and still one up to this present day.

All the tour services Placencia has to offer from land to sea are provided by Seahorse Dive Shop. Sea tours include snorkeling, diving, fishing & dive training. Land tours include exploring the Jaguar Reserve, Mayan ruins & Monkey River. Several things that make Seahorse so special and bring people back time after time are its experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly guides. In addition, satisfaction and safety is their number one priority. The Young family is 4th generation Placencians and Seahorse is a family run business. On any given day you’ll find sons Brian Jr., who now takes care of day to day operations, and Shaun head boat captain at the dive shop.
