ROTARY CLUB OF PLACENCIA NEWS
The past month featured two successful fund raisers for the Rotary Club of Placencia, however, the success was tempered by sadness as we noted the passing of one of our newest Club members in a tragic accident. As several members of our Club were attending the District Conference in Belize City, word was received that Carl Laws, a recent member transfer from Maine, was involved in a motorcycle accident on the Peninsula Road resulting in his death. Carl had become very involved in the activities of our Club, including being elected Treasurer for the 2010-2011 Rotary year, and was a Paul Harris Fellow (an award signifying significant financial contributions to the Rotary Foundation). Carl will be missed by all.

We wish to thank all who donated and all who participated with special thanks to our Auctioneer Bill Butcher and Dr. Wayne Warnica for selling many tickets in Canada for our trip raffle.
BINGO
On February 20, the Rotary Club of Placencia once again held a Bingo game at the Paradise. As was the case with the first game held in January, the event was well attended and everyone enjoyed the evening. Since this is a relatively new fund raising idea for our Club, we are still trying different games and will rely on feedback from the players as to what will be done for future games. The next Bingo night has not been scheduled at this time, so, please watch the cable TV access channel, listen to LOVEFM, and watch for flyers around the Village for the date and time of the next Bingo night. We wish to thank, once again, Alan and Janet of the Paradise Resort for providing the venue.
BOOKS
After nearly a year of e-mails and other contacts, a shipment of books provided by the Rotary B.I.G. organization arrived in Placencia. These books are presently being sorted and catalogued for the Library at St. John’s Memorial School in Placencia and will soon be available to the children. Thanks go out to Wanda Stakutis for all of her hard work obtaining these books, Rotary B.I.G. for the donation of the books, the Parole Rotary Club of Annapolis, Maryland for paying the shipping costs, Rotarian Ellis Flowers for providing brokerage services and Harald and Carl Wallen for bringing the books to Placencia in one of the Wallens’ trucks.
DISTRICT CONFERENCE
Every year, Rotary holds a District Conference in the country of the current District Governor. This year’s District Governor is Dr. Marcelo Coyi and the conference and the conference was held in Belize City the last weekend in February. The Rotary Club of Placencia was represented by Harald Wallen, Sandra Johnson, Lydia Villanueva, Eugenie Adderly Gabourel, Bob Edmunds, and Sandra Steele. The attendees met with members from other Clubs in our District (District 4250 which is comprised of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras) for social activities, seminars and conferences to discuss issues relating to our District including Rotary International’s Future Vision pilot project which will evaluate a new funding mechanism for Rotary Grants. All who attended reported that the conference was enjoyable and that they came away with valuable information that should help our Club function more effectively.
UPCOMING EVENTS
As previously mentioned, plans are being made for more Bingo nights with the idea that Bingo may be scheduled on a regular basis. Also, Club members are assisting the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department with the annual Flaming Heart Ball scheduled to be held on March 6 and planning will begin for Lobsterfest, which will feature, as always, our infamous Duck Race. News on all events will be available on the cable TV public access channel, on LOVEFM (with thanks, as always, to Rene Villanueva), on flyers posted around the Village, or from any Rotarian.
