A second PADI Digital Underwater Photography Course will be offered to 12 tour guides in Placencia
February 23-25, 2009. The classes will be 6-9pm at theSEAbelize conference room. The course is
free and open to both snorkel and dive guides.
Two dives are required for PADI certification and the field date will be scheduled
with the participants.
Two more Ecocean workshops will be held 6-8pm, March 2 & 3 also at the SEAbelize
conference room.
Ecocean is the web based data set of over 1500 whale shark photographs. Attendance
is only necessary
at one workshop to learn how to take proper whale shark identification photographs,
how to submit
them to the website, and how to search the website to find out more about whale
sharks in Belize
and whale sharks in general.
Space is available for up to 15 participants per session/night. To participate
in the u/w course or
workshops sign up at the Placencia Tourism center or contact the Project Coordinator,
Lisa Carne.
This course and workshops are funded through a grant entitled “Promoting the protection, conservation
and sustainable use of the marine resources of the Belize Barrier Reef System through Advanced Training
and Education for Marine Tour Guides on the Placencia Peninsula” awarded to the Placencia
Tour Guide Association in 2008.
Other training included GPS workshops, attendance at the 2nd International Whale Shark conference
held last July in Holbox, Mexico (see the August 2008 Placencia Breeze article), climate change
and coral bleaching workshops, and computer training.
